Raster Gallery, Warsaw

Azorro, We like it a lotRASTER is an independent art space in Warsaw, established in 2001, exhibiting and representing emerging artists from Poland and abroad. The program of Raster is not merely focused on visual art but also includes screenings, discussions, literature events, concerts as well as informal meetings focused on the local community. Our strategy is to work both internationally and locally, so as to combine the most progressive art achievements with a spirit of private, everyday social existence.

What is unique about Raster? How does it differ from other galleries in Poland? It’s not a shop selling paintings and jewellery. We don’t have glass display cabinets, but we do have a good knowledge of what’s happening in new young art. Our goal is to present artists who, in our opinion, are the best representatives of the young generation; as well as those from the older generations, whose work is nevertheless valuable and important to us. Not only does the gallery sell the works of associated artists: but also it aims to help in the realisation of their projects, promote them and support them with publicity. We create opinions. The gallery we have opened is a place you not only should, but will also want to visit - to see the works, talk and buy (literally and metaphorically) things and ideas that are really worth it.

Our emphasis is on artists born after 1970. We are interested in the phenomenon of generation self-identity as well as in multidisciplinary activities, combining visual arts, literature and music. One important feature of our projects is a reflection on the specificity of ambient visual culture - from the underground scene to a totally commercial approach (The Polish House project, from 1999). We participated in the organisation of large festivals in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw (The poets and the city 1998, Festival ludique 1999, The poets and the city 2000). The gallery holds a personal and operational affiliation with the art magazine “Raster”. The artists who become our collaborators are not solely of Polish origin - some live and work abroad. We cooperate also with foreign artists and galleries abroad.

Artists we work with are distinguished by a fresh artistic language and intrinsic look into the reality of every day - their personal successes and failures. Divisions into kinds are of no importance to us; we simply try to present the best pictures, paintings, photography, objects, movies and video installations.
